I started homeschooling 18 years ago when my daughter was born, but at that time I didn’t realize what I was doing. I read her stories, sang to her, exposed her to different environments, took her to parks where she met and saw other children, took her to aquariums, museums, play dates, walks, Masjids, etc.

I officially began homeschooling when my husband suggested that I try it with our eldest child, she was 5 at the time. She was attending Kindergarten at a local Islamic School where I was also teaching. I felt the school was not challenging her enough; I would work with her when she can home after school. When she finished that school year, we decided to homeschool. I didn’t know the first thing about homeschooling and was worried, confused, and extremely scared.

A relative told me about her experience during her middle school years. I looked into a curriculum and liked it very much. So our journey started with the intention of homeschooling for that one year. Here we are 14 years later, and counting, still homeschooling and loving it! I would do it again if I had the choice.

Don’t think that I was a pro, I was not on day one, nor am I now. We have amazing days where we accomplish above and beyond what we had planned and we have had days when I would wonder why I was doing what I was. But when I look back at it, it has been a great investment….an investment into my children and their future. Over the years I realized that no one will raise my child the way I can. A parent is the one who can understand their child better than anyone else.

I was born and raised in New York City. I am married to my wonderful, supportive, and loving husband for 19 years and am a mother of 7 children (5 girls and 2 boys). I hold an Associates in Early childhood and Elementary Education and a Bachelors in Family and Consumer Sciences with a focus in Professional Child Development. Currently, I have 2 children attending prestigious colleges on scholarships, 2 in high school, 2 in elementary school, and a toddler that’s learning as she grows, soon to join us at the homeschooling table!
